Valentines Presents / January 11, 2019 / Lauri Cooke
The country was under the power of the hard-hearted Roman Emperor Claudius II who at the time forbade marriage ceremonies and constantly betrothed Rome in bloody battles. He had a crazy idea. He thought if a man wasnt married he wouldnt mind joining the army. But to his horror Claudius discovered that men were reluctant to join the army because of their loyalty to their wives and families. So he sanctioned a callous order that banned engagements and marriages in Rome. But in spite of this Saint Valentine continued to perform marriage rituals. Thrown into jail it was said that Valentine fell in love with his jailors daughter and restored her sight through his Christian faith and devotion for her. Before his execution Valentine sent her a final message signed "From your Valentine" - a phrase that gets a lot of mileage and one which has become an everlasting symbol of camaraderie and warmth.
Of course choosing the right Valentines presents for him and her is important. But if you want a night of romance its just as important to get the movie right on this night of love. Because if you dont you can bet your bottom dollar you wont be getting that "loving feeling." Snuggling up with your sweetheart eating chocolates and sipping wine wont be part of the programme. Anyone can run out and rent a romantic film starring Julia Roberts for Valentines Day. Anyone can stream the latest passion-infused offering from Kate Hudson - or Jennifer Aniston or Drew Barrymore. Anyone can immerse themselves in Pretty Woman Bridget Joness Diary or Romeo and Juliet. But it requires real bottle to sit down with that special lady or gent in your life and take one of these hugely unpleasant choices.
Legend One As one of the legends goes in the 3rd century there lived a priest named Valentine. The Roman Emperor Claudius II was ruling at this time and Valentine like many of the public under Claudius rule disliked him with a passion. Claudius wanted all men to join the army. But because men had wives and families of their own these men werent so keen on signing up. Believing a singleton soldier was a better soldier than a married young man Claudius introduced a callous new law which banned marriage ceremonies. In Claudius opinion this would mean more strong young men would join the army with no wives at his disposal. Valentine the priest thought this new law was outrageous so what did he do? He married couples in secret.
