St Patricks Day Gifts / February 16, 2019 / Blanche Durham.
On March 17 1762 Irish soldiers who served in the English military marched through New York City. The parade and music stirred their emotions and brought back memories of Ireland and fellow soldiers they had lost. Irish Americans began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick s Day Parade (organized by the Charitable Irish Society) in New York City in 1766. Even today the St. Patrick Day parade is a mixture of religious beliefs and many people go to Ireland for the festivities fireworks and the parade. Parades take place in other places too: London Paris Rome Moscow Beijing Hong Kong Singapore as well as throughout the Americas.
We wear green and don t know why. We may live in communities that dye their rivers green or present bar patrons with green beer. Restaurants serve corned beef and cabbage amid leprechaun decorations or plastic pots-of-gold. This is a difficult dish to prepare: eat out! School children enjoy cupcakes of any flavor with green icing. Other snacks may be potato chips or potato sticks. Parties for St Patricks Day are sure to be decorated with green and white twisted streamers and four leaf clovers. Paper party goods are the only option for children s parties but some adult dinners feature Irish linen and good china.
Daily we are reminded about our environment and the importance of recycling reusing and reducing everything we use. Florists and restaurants are now getting on board with this mantra as well. Recently I have noticed various restaurants using succulent plants as table decorations on their dining room tables. Bar arrangements and front desk floral arrangements are incorporating succulents as well. According to Sherene Hulugalle the idea of using succulent plants for table decorations is that once the flowers fade the succulents can be re-planted and will keep growing.
Also succulents don t use as much water and will last longer and their colors will be more vibrant. Another fact about succulent plants is that they last a long time as long as they are in well drained soil and watered regularly. They can thrive indoors as long as they have indirect sunlight. Here are a few ideas for table decorations for your St Patrick s Day party. Incorporate succulent plants with cymbidium orchids in a flower arrangement as seen above. The green aspect will be the succulents and to bring a bit of color in use a pink orchid in the arrangement for your St Patrick s Day decorations.
