And just because you re standing next to a bunch of old grandmother looking ladies dressed in high heels and playboy bunny outfits don t make the mistake of thinking your chances are any better. After all these ladies might be old but they have fast feet and the spikes on those heels. Wow better watch out! The Ever Changing Mardi Gras Celebration Dates So you ve eagerly waited and anticipated this year s carnival like celebrations but just when does the season begin and when does it end? The actual date always falls on a Tuesday between February 3rd and March 9th.
Characterized by costumes bright decorations and general merriment often induced by the consumption of alcohol the celebration came close to being banned several times during the 19th century but the formation of a social organization (krewe) by six men and the resulting Carnival Parade on the evening of Mardi Gras in 1857 rejuvenated and restructured the mayhem. Though the festivities were halted for the duration of the Civil War they resumed in full force upon its conclusion. New krewes have been formed continuously since the first parade and are added as space allows annually.
The parade continues from one end of the village to the other with most of the village inhabitants either looking from their windows or standing on the pavements and cheering on the flambeaux carriers. The whole thing reaches it s climax after about 45 minutes when the torches are thrown off the bridge and into the River Earn with the idea that with them all the village demons then float away and arrive at the next village. Across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to New Orleans at the Mardi Gras parade the highlight for many is also the Flambeaux Procession.
