The Saints appreciation parade will likely roll at 5 PM on Tuesday February 9 from the Superdome and will travel down Loyola to Howard around Lee Circle up St. Charles Avenue to Canal making a loop on Canal Street to Convention Center Blvd ending near the Morial Convention Center. Zulu - Mardi Gras morning The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club parade is well known for its interesting history (it originated over 100 years ago as an African American organization satirizing the White krewes during the era of racial segregation) and "golden nugget" (coconut) parade throws. Kid s Parade: Stages on 15th Street west of Beck Ave. and will travel on Beck Ave. to 11th St. and disband. Kid s Parade immediately follows the Pet Parade. Today the celebration of Mardi Gras/carnival has very little to do with religion.
In the early 90 s people began to tire of the thin strands of plastic beads and would actually just leave them laying on the ground so some krewe members began to throw larger beads or novelty type beads with a theme. So why throw Mardi Gras beads? There is a school of thought that the beads or representative of the jewelry that was worn by royalty. People stand on the side of the road begging trinkets. "Throw me something Mister" is a phrase you can hear over and over again. If you catch the eye of a krewe member they will reward you by throwing a string of beads or more to you.
The carnival celebration always begin on January 6th which is the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany) and gains momentum reaching its climax at Midnight on Mardi Gras the day before Ash Wednesday. Actual Dates of Mardi Gras for Next Decade But just how will you know which Tuesday it will be? Ash Wednesday will always be 46 days before Easter and Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. So Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 23rd and April 25th and the exact date will coincide with the first Sunday after the full moon following a Spring Equinox.
