Mardi Gras Carnival Art / February 21, 2019 / Lauri Cooke
The carnival celebration always begin on January 6th which is the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany) and gains momentum reaching its climax at Midnight on Mardi Gras the day before Ash Wednesday. Actual Dates of Mardi Gras for Next Decade But just how will you know which Tuesday it will be? Ash Wednesday will always be 46 days before Easter and Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. So Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 23rd and April 25th and the exact date will coincide with the first Sunday after the full moon following a Spring Equinox.
I m still working off that hangover. Winding Down With Rex and Comus After all the revelry of the Carnival season and the events leading up to it Mardi Gras night has become a sacred "restful" institution in my house. Like a runner who has passed the finish line of a massive marathon I offer those weary exhausted souls one last hoorah before Ash Wednesday begins. With a huge pot of red beans and rice multiple boxes of Popeye s Chicken ("Ain t no pawty like a popeyes pawty y all") and the last remaining crumbs of king cake my "tribe" gathers at 7pm on Mardi Gras night for the viewing of The Rex/Comus Ball on WYES. (*details of the Rex/Comus drinking game will not be discussed in this article. Thanks ~Mr. Credo).
It is usual that during the carnival aristocrats dress up as commoners men cross-dress as women and poor people dress up as princes and princesses - social roles and class differences are expected to be forgotten once a year but only for the duration of the festival. Rivertown s Mardi Gras Museum in New Orleans takes you through 100 years of Mardi Gras history showcasing floats memorabilia and pictures helping you understand all the history and culture of the festive holiday. There are lots of cheap hotels available both inside and out of the French Quarter so you can be as near or far from the parties as you like.
