Mardi Gras Carnival Art / February 21, 2019 / Eve Callahan
You can pack a picnic lunch play ball watch the parades and enjoy the festivities. Because Mardi Gras Day lasts the majority of the day wear sunscreen bring your lunch and make sure you have enough bags to bring home a large catch. Mardi Gras Day parades are the biggest and utilize the largest number of throws. Have loads of fun and catch a lot of Mardi Gras beads. Over the years I have developed certain classic New Orleans Carnival traditions of my own (as most people in this town do). I am what you call a "ball-goer." I try to attend as many of the large carnival balls as I can. In 2008 I consumed a mass quantity of energy drinks and few thousand diet cokes which provided me with the stamina to make an appearance at the big three: the Endymion Extravaganza the Bacchus Ball and the Orpheus Orpheuscapade.
Mardi Gras has long combined wild street activities open to everyone with events organized by private clubs known as krewes. It is a child-friendly season everywhere in New Orleans besides Bourbon Street. It is a day of carefree indulgence marked by revelers in bizarre costumes dancing in the street. It is French for Fat Tuesday the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is without a doubt Louisiana s oldest celebrated holiday. It is just around the corner don t forget. It is referred to with different names. Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday" is the day before the season of Lent begins.
The traditional Mardi Gras King cake is thought to have been derived from this need to use up perishable items. Today Carnival and Mardi Gras are celebrated in many different fashions. Some only celebrate on the actual Tuesday before Ash Wednesday while others take full advantage of the time and attend many luncheons masked balls and parades. Parades are generally the highlight for the majority of those who observe Mardi Gras and though Mobile and New Orleans have the biggest and oldest celebrations many other communities all along the Gulf Coast are forming their own societies.
