St Patricks Day Gifts / February 17, 2019 / Blanche Durham
On March 17 1762 Irish soldiers who served in the English military marched through New York City. The parade and music stirred their emotions and brought back memories of Ireland and fellow soldiers they had lost. Irish Americans began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick s Day Parade (organized by the Charitable Irish Society) in New York City in 1766. Even today the St. Patrick Day parade is a mixture of religious beliefs and many people go to Ireland for the festivities fireworks and the parade. Parades take place in other places too: London Paris Rome Moscow Beijing Hong Kong Singapore as well as throughout the Americas.
We wear green and don t know why. We may live in communities that dye their rivers green or present bar patrons with green beer. Restaurants serve corned beef and cabbage amid leprechaun decorations or plastic pots-of-gold. This is a difficult dish to prepare: eat out! School children enjoy cupcakes of any flavor with green icing. Other snacks may be potato chips or potato sticks. Parties for St Patricks Day are sure to be decorated with green and white twisted streamers and four leaf clovers. Paper party goods are the only option for children s parties but some adult dinners feature Irish linen and good china.
He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion. How is the Patrick s day celebrated ? As a part of the celebration Many Irish people wear a bunch of shamrock on their lapels or caps on St. Patrick s Day while children wear tricolored (green white and orange) badges. Girls traditionally wore green ribbons in their hair (many still do). A three-leafed Shamrock clover was used by St. Patrick to represent the trinity like father son and holy spirit; also shamrock was considered lucky by Irish people. The shamrock was used by the Irish as a mark of nationalism when the English invaded the Celtics.
