Valentines Greetings / January 6, 2019 / Rachel Gates.
In the United States St. Valentines Day is the second largest card giving holiday celebrated. Somewhere in the vicinity of 190 million lovers and friends greeting cards are sent each year. The holiday is said to come to us from ancient Roman Empire times when a priest who was forbidden to perform marriages for the young strapping healthy Roman soldiers defied Roman law and performed the marriages anyway. He was eventually caught and imprisoned and executed. Now thats romantic. Ever since the early 1700s Americans have been sending expression of friendship gratitude and love to those around them. In the early 1800s Esther A. Howland produced the first commercial Valentine greeting cards. And even though receiving a beautiful card is wonderful Americans have demonstrated by their purchases during this winter holiday that candy is still our sentiment of preference. Of all of the gifts and love notes exchanged on Valentines Day the most popular item is candy and for good reason.
A popular one by Fred Jacob is that love is like fine wine and it gets better with age. Another on that I found especially interesting is by Diane Ackerman which goes like this everyone admits that love is wonderful yet no one agrees on what it is. These are sayings that are truly food for thought. There are so many others that will amaze you while others will crack you up with laughter. Valentine and love are really synonymous and most sayings will be pegged on love. If you have an opinion about love why not let the world know what it is all about. You might turn heads with yours. There are other sayings that are just negative when it comes to love. Other people may consider the sayings practical and even truthful. One that comes to mind goes like this love is like a toilet and those who are inside want to get out while those who are out want to get in.
That may explain why more and more people are flocking to boutique-style artistic ecard sites such as JacquieLawson.com and Ojolie.com to send animated ecards for important occasions like Valentines Day. English illustrator Jacquie Lawson first won a following back around the turn of the millennium for an animated Christmas card she sent out to friends which got passed around and transformed her almost overnight into a phenomenon. Visitors worldwide pay annual subscriptions to her site especially for ecards featuring her beloved chocolate Labrador-Springer spaniel mix Chudleigh. He stars in such Valentine offerings as "Special Delivery" in which the pooch watches with growing despondence as a bird pulls from a mailbox a flurry of cards none of them for him until another loving dog arrives carrying a personal Valentine card.
The supplies of goodies are unlimited and the candies nestled in elaborate beribboned boxes are like gold. For some reason perhaps the value of the cocoa and chocolate products in previous centuries made the gift of candy a real prize. So when a young suitor showed up to his girls house with candy under his arm the object of his affections knew she was highly prized. Still other Lawson options include non-canine creations like "Bubble Bath" in which a playful bird pops the cork on a bottle of pink Champagne then splashes in the bubbly-filled glass; and "Valentine Waltz" featuring a procession of nine different flowers whole initials form the word "V-A-L-E-N-T-I-N-E" while the blossoms form heart. The effects are tasteful and unique with a typically British country charm.
