Mardi Gras Carnival Art / February 21, 2019 / Cindy Navarro.
Around 30 000 visitors flock to Venice each day for the world famous carnival so be sure to book a room in one of the hotels prior to your trip. Be sure to pick up a traditional mask in Venice before you hit the Mardi Gras events. They can be found from a huge selection of street vendors and shops splattered along the side alleys. The carnival always runs with a different theme each year and activities include a silent regatta of row boats along the Canal Grande illuminated only with candles symbolic and suggestive symbol of rejoining with the city; concerts theatre pieces historical re-enactments grand balls and film shows.
Characterized by costumes bright decorations and general merriment often induced by the consumption of alcohol the celebration came close to being banned several times during the 19th century but the formation of a social organization (krewe) by six men and the resulting Carnival Parade on the evening of Mardi Gras in 1857 rejuvenated and restructured the mayhem. Though the festivities were halted for the duration of the Civil War they resumed in full force upon its conclusion. New krewes have been formed continuously since the first parade and are added as space allows annually.
Refreshments will need to be more amazing than usual and the dances will need to be courtlier than ever before. Everything will take on a fancier appearance when masks with feathers and sequins appear at a party. Laughter is an automatic response to the sight of masks made with the look of antique feathers and sequins in a costume s design. It is nearly impossible not to smile at this soft finery. Every Hogmanay or New Years Eve in a small Perthshire village in Scotland the tradition of a parade being lead by flambeaux carriers lives on. The celebrations commence with the sounds of the pipe band (bagpipes and drums) and shortly before midnight the main road running from one end of the village to the other is closed off to traffic.
And just because you re standing next to a bunch of old grandmother looking ladies dressed in high heels and playboy bunny outfits don t make the mistake of thinking your chances are any better. After all these ladies might be old but they have fast feet and the spikes on those heels. Wow better watch out! The Ever Changing Mardi Gras Celebration Dates So you ve eagerly waited and anticipated this year s carnival like celebrations but just when does the season begin and when does it end? The actual date always falls on a Tuesday between February 3rd and March 9th.
The carnival is usually a precursor to a fasting period that follows this period.
